Three telecom operators — M1, Singtel and StarHub – in Singapore will stop offering 2G services from April 1, 2017.

They will discontinue 2G voice, messaging and data services.

M1, Singtel and StarHub will utilize the current 2G spectrum for offering advanced 3G and 4G services.

At present, majority of mobile customers are on 3G and 4G networks in Singapore. Small percentage of customers remains on 2G-only mobile devices.

Customers on 2G mobile phones will need to place their SIM cards into a 3G or 4G devices to get 3G 4G service immediately, and those using 3G and 4G handsets will not be affected.

Earlier, Ovum said that some telecom operators may close down their 3G networks before 2G in a bid to focus on LTE services.
Ovum in its latest telecom analysis report said that LTE’s affordability will prompt telecom operators in developed markets to refarm GSM or CDMA spectrum and close down legacy networks.
