Vodafone strategies fail to add mobile Internet users?

TRAI has released its telecom subscriber statistics for April 2018 indicating that Vodafone India’s performance in mobile Internet space was dismal.
Vodafone mobile Internet in IndiaVodafone India’s mobile Internet subscriber base – including smartphones and dongles — marginally increased to 59.90 million in April from 59.76 million in March. The company’s 59.9 million mobile Internet connections are from 3G and 4G networks.

The company’s poor performance in the mobile Internet space is continuing despite making investment in networks and meeting competitor pricing. Vodafone and Idea Cellular are in the process of completing the merger in India.

Vodafone 4G has achieved an average 4G download speed of 4.9 Mbps during a drive test in Delhi NCR region organized by TRAI recently. This compares with 7.3 Mbps for Reliance Jio and 8.9 Mbps for Airtel.

But Vodafone 4G scores better in terms of 4G data upload speed with the average 4G upload speed of 5.8 Mbps.

Vodafone 3G shows download speed of 2.3 Mbps as compared with 3.3 Mbps for Airtel 3G, 2 Mbps for Idea Cellular 3G and 3.7 Mbps for MTNL 3G in Delhi NCR region during the test drive.

Wireless Internet

Bharti Airtel’s mobile Internet subscriber base reached 87.51 million as compared with 83.49 million in March 2018.
The mobile Internet subscriber base of Idea Cellular reached 42.40 million from 39.83 million.

BSNL India’s mobile Internet subscriber base touched 11.51 million as against 11.78 million achieved in March, showing a marginal decline.

Reliance Jio Infocomm has again topped in the addition of mobile Internet users with its 4G subscriber base touching 196.19 million from 186.56 million. Reliance Jio added almost 10 million 4G connections in April.

Wired Broadband

BSNL lost some wired broadband connections as well. BSNL’s wired broadband connections reached 9.24 million from 9.3 million.

Bharti Airtel has marginally increased its wired broadband connections to 2.19 million from 2.18 million.

Atria Convergence Technologies has 1.31 million wired broadband connections as compared with 1.31 million in March, showing a flat growth.

MTNL has lost its wired broadband connections to 0.86 million from 0.87 million in the previous month.

Hathway Cable & Datacom has marginally increased its wired broadband connections to 0.79 million from 0.78 million, TRAI said.
