Deutsche Telekom deploys IS-MIMO for 50% improvement in LTE-A

Deutsche Telekom has deployed Inter-Sector MIMO (IS-MIMO) to bring peak performance to the cell-edge area and improve the overall LTE-A customer experience by up to 50 percent.

Samsung and Deutsche Telekom developed Inter-Sector MIMO, a new technology concept, to solve the challenge of limited throughput at the cell edge.

Deutsche Telekom has demonstrated consistent user experience on its test LTE network in Lingen, said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, chief technology officer of Deutsche Telekom.

Dong Soo Park, head of R&D Team in Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said IS-MIMO combines all intra-site cells to create one cell and transmits the data signal to the user terminal from the best source.

In the Lingen field trial, Deutsche Telekom demonstrated that the IS-MIMO combination extends the area where LTE-A customers can reach the maximum throughput of 150 Mbps. The capability of IS-MIMO effectively removes the cell edge area between two intra-site sectors via cell combining and MIMO streams transmission from adjacent sectors.

Deutsche Telekom and Samsung also demonstrated a combination of carrier aggregation and IS-MIMO. With IS-MIMO on one or more carriers, more consistent customer experience over a given coverage can be achieved.

Deutsche Telekom has 151 million mobile customers, 30 million fixed-network lines and 17 million broadband lines and generated revenues of EUR 62.7 billion in 2014.
