The launch of VSAT services is part of Telefonica’s vision to offer customers a seamless end-to-end networking solution for all of their remote locations.

As part of the VSAT project, Telefonica Peru purchased two iDirect Universal 15000 Series satellite hubs and more than 1,000 Evolution X1 and X3 remotes to support growth in the banking, oil & gas, and government sectors.

iDirect technology, running on iDirect’s iDX 3.1 software, enables Telefonica Peru to integrate its existing MPLS networks with its new VSAT networks.

Telefonica is focusing on enterprise business in a big way. VSAT networks are extensively used by banking industry, where customers need to connect remote branches and ATMs to corporate headquarters.

Moreover, Telefonica del Peru’s iDirect network supports video conferencing and VoIP, allowing customers to use these latency-sensitive applications efficiently and with lower operating costs.

iDirect’s iDX 3.1 technology gives Telefonica Peru a more affordable, efficient, and highly scalable solution for extending its network. The Group Quality of Service (GQoS) features of IDX 3.1 allow Telefonica del Peru to reduce the OPEX of managing a large-scale network by lowering the amount of bandwidth needed to keep idle or dormant remotes in network.

A new licensing option for the Evolution XLC-M Line Card, which allows the XLC-M to support up to 16 narrowband return channels, also helps Telefonica del Peru lower CAPEX by significantly increasing hub scalability and reducing the cost per remote site.

“As we expanded our services to meet the growing demands of our customers, which include the 2000 largest enterprises in Peru, we were looking for a satellite solution that offered a high-degree of reliability and efficiency,” said Martin Cabellos, satellite product manager, Telefonica del Peru.

“Just as iDirect’s VSAT networks integrate seamlessly with Telefonica’s existing terrestrial network, the strengths of the Evolution platform mesh seamlessly with Telefonica del Peru’s expansion plans,” said Rob Kilroy, regional vice president, Sales, Americas, iDirect.
