Huawei assists Rostelecom to deploy FTTH FastConnect services

Telecom network vendor Huawei will assist Russian mobile service provider Rostelecom to deploy fiber to the home (FTTH) FastConnect services.

Earlier, the Russian government asked Rostelecom, which is offering fixed network and long-distance transmission services in 8 federal districts across the country, to develop 13 million FTTH users by 2015.

To ensure return on investment (RoI), Huawei and Rostelecom jointly designed Floor Distribution Boxes (FDBs).

In the initial stage, Rostelecom will deploy FDBs that provide access to single user. As the number of subscriber increases, the FDB can evolve to support four and even eight users, ensuring quick access of FTTH users.

As per Huawei’s thin-covered network deployment model, networks will be constructed to user access points and FDBs will be deployed as the interface between the outside plant (OSP) and the inside plant (ISP) in the preliminary network construction stage.

In future network expansion situations, pre-made drop cables can be used for plug-and-play and quick service provisioning.

The FDB model ensures flexible way of expansion without any splicing, while engineers can complete the expansion in one minute without any tools.

Huawei said the FDB solution is particularly applicable to the sparsely populated sections of the Russian territory where the actual installation rate is low and where cold seasons leave only short periods of time for network construction.

In the future, Rostelecom and Huawei will work on optical distribution network (ODN) innovation in a bid to improve deployment efficiency, maximize ROI, and reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Huawei will continue to develop FTTH products and solutions for Rostelecom to help the latter execute its FTTH strategy.
