Ericsson adds cloud-enabled media management services

Telecom network vendor Ericsson on Thursday announced the launch of its cloud-enabled media management services.

As part of the Broadcast and Media Services portfolio, the cloud-enabled media management services are designed to manage contribution, archiving and media processing in the public and private cloud.

Ericsson said these services will deliver new benefits to broadcasters by providing security, choice, agility and efficiency while eliminating the substantial upfront costs often associated with hardware and infrastructure.

Thorsten Sauer, head of Broadcast and Media Services, Ericsson, said: “We’ll be able to scale applications quickly according to our clients’ needs and help them realize greater efficiency by offering services procured on a utility or pay-as-you-go basis.”

Since consumers will look for on-demand access to content, there will be more complexity in media management as content will need to be created and delivered to multiple different platforms and catch-up services, often with short lead times.

This apart, Ericsson also announced Ericsson MediaFirst, a new cloud-based platform that embraces all content sources and delivery networks.

The Ericsson MediaFirst TV Platform equips operators to deliver large scale video services to devices. Currently in trials with a targeted set of operators, the platform is offered as a software as a service and will be generally available in Q2 2015.

Earlier, Ericsson unveiled its real-time platform that supports live captioning in various languages for broadcasters using speech-to-text, newsroom integration, and rapid offline content preparation.

The software platform allows multiple captioners to prepare and deliver real-time services for clients while maximizing re-use of the caption data. The platform is being used to deliver live captioning services for major broadcast clients, including the BBC.
