Telecom network vendor Ericsson announced its deal to acquire Envivio, a provider of software-based video encoding, for approximately $125 million.

The acquisition will enhance Ericsson’s software video encoding capabilities and its virtualized encoding concept.

Envivio has supplied its video solutions to more than 400 TV service provider and content owner customers in all markets globally. The San Francisco, CA-based Envivio generated revenues of $43 million in 2014 and has a staff of approximately 200 employees.

Main customers of Envivio include Comcast, Cox Communications, Liberty Global, Sky, Telstra and Time Warner Cable.

The strategy of Ericsson is to strengthen its video compression position by combining its position in broadcast and contribution with Envivio offerings in multi-screen cable and telecom. Envivio’s cloud-centric and software-based video capabilities will be a key addition to Ericsson’s media portfolio.

Ericsson said that Envivio’s software solutions for pay TV and TV Anywhere applications perform software-based video encoding/transcoding, processing, packaging and ad insertion. Envivio’s cloud-centric pure software video processing is available on Intel-based appliances or IT blade servers.
