Celkon opens Rs 200 crore phone manufacturing facility in Telangana

Indian phone maker Celkon today announced its Rs 200 crore manufacturing facility in Medchal, Telangana.

Celkon will be investing around Rs 200 crore in the next three months for this facility. The unit will have 4 production lines initially and eventually will scale up to 12 production lines.

The initial capacity of the facility is 2 lakh handsets per month. With 12 production lines, the production capacity will go up to 5 lakh handsets a month.

Celkon aims to reach a capacity of producing 10 lakh handsets a month in India.

The facility is employing 500 skilled technicians and will eventually scale up to 1,200 people.

Celkon will look at setting up the second phase of the facility. However, the company is yet to decide whether the second phase will be independent or within a manufacturing cluster.

Currently Celkon sells 7 lakh handsets per month and is targeting 10 lakh a month.

Indian phone users will receive 7-8 percent cost benefits on the handsets initially.

The facility will manufacture entry-level and mid-level smartphones and feature phones at the moment.

KalvakuntlaTaraka Rama Rao, minister for IT and Pachayat Raj, inaugurated the unit along with Y Guru, CMD, Celkon Mobiles and Murali Retineni, executive director of Celkon Mobiles.

The manufacturing unit is 30,000 Sq ft in area and is ready to start production from Day 1, making Celkon the first brand to start operations in the state.

Around 60 percent of the mobile phones manufactured in the facility will comprise of feature phones and the rest will be smartphones.

Y Guru, chairman and managing director of Celkon Mobiles, said: “The facility will result into a direct significant cost and quality benefit for the consumers. Celkon has many new and exciting devices lined up for launch this year, some of which will be resulting out of this facility.”
