Karbonn smartphone market share nosedives to 5.2% from 11.1%, Samsung and Micromax gain

CMR smartphone market share statistics for the first quarter of 2014 (Q1 2014) says Samsung share rose to 43.2 percent from 40.4 percent, Micromax grew to 17.5 percent from 15.7 percent, while the third placed Karbonn share nosedived to 5.2 percent from 11.1 percent in Q4 2013.

Karbonn is not available for comments on the dismal performance.

CMR said Indian smartphone market size rose 219.4 percent to 14.5 million in Q1 2014 against Q1 2013 and 1.9 percent over Q4 2013. Feature phone market dipped 6.5 percent to 44.4 million over Q1 2013 and decreased 21.1 percent over Q4 2013.

68.3 percent of smartphones were 3G-enabled.

In the overall phone market, Samsung increased its market share to 20.3 percent in Q1 2014 from 15.6 percent in Q4 2013, Nokia 17.6 percent from 16.16 percent and Micromax 11.2 percent from 11.6 percent.

Indian phone market grew 8.9 percent to 58.9 million in Q1 2014 from Q1 2013, but decreased 16.4 percent from Q4 2014.

“It will be interesting to watch how consumers in India react to the Windows Mobile offerings from vendors like Micromax, Karbonn, Lava and others, who are likely to launch their Windows Phone 8.1 devices shortly,” said Tarun Pathak, analyst, Devices, CMR Telecoms Practice.
