MediaTek will tie up with telecom equipment and software maker Nokia on the design of a next-generation mobile communication system for 5G technology.

Nokia and MediaTek will develop a standards-compliant pre-commercial platform for 5G New Radio communications technology beginning 2018. The goal is to roll-out a 5G-ready network from Nokia combined with a 5G system-on-chip (SoC) from MediaTek to bring new devices to market faster.

“Working with Nokia, we are bringing mobile operators the end-to-end solutions they need to accelerate adoption of 5G and to ensure a cohesive, fully functional experience across devices and the network.”

Nokia and MediaTek will ensure all aspects of the network and the chipset inside devices are tightly integrated to deliver to consumers and industry the promise of 5G. MediaTek’s chipset will be optimized around the modem, radio, data processing and across applications like multimedia that can benefit from 5G performance.

MediaTek claims that it powers more than 35 percent of the world’s smart devices. MediaTek also enables more than 1.5 billion connected devices a year worldwide and is a category leader in five key areas including connected TV and tablets.

MediaTek Helio X30

Meanwhile, MediaTek announced the availability of its MediaTek Helio X30 system-on-chip (SoC) for high-end smartphones. MediaTek Helio X30 is entering mass production and gaining accolades with design wins. Smartphones powered by this flagship chipset will be available in Q2 2017.

MediaTek Helio X30 brings together MediaTek’s 10-core, Tri-Cluster architecture on its first 10nm chipset to deliver more than 50 percent power savings and a 35 percent increase in performance from MediaTek’s previous generation chipset.

CorePilot 4.0 technology

MediaTek also announced CorePilot 4.0 technology that intelligently manages smartphone tasks to deliver the perfect balance of processing power and battery life. CorePilot 4.0 is available on MediaTek’s newest SoC, the MediaTek Helio X30. CorePilot 4.0 can deliver up to 25 percent more power savings over the previous version which means end users can do more with their smartphone, for longer.
