Airtel 3G gets a boost as it launches video downloads at Rs 1

Telecom Lead India: Bharti Airtel has launched video downloads at Rs 1.

Airtel offers video downloads across 8 genres including movies, lifestyle, music, comedy etc.

Users with GPRS/2G/3G connections in over 500 mobile devices, including feature phones can download 30,000+ videos.

The new video tariff is expected to boost 2G and 3G customer base. Bharti Airtel’s 3G subscribers reached 6.4 million in the fourth quarter of FY 2013.

Airtel recently said its data continues to lead the mobile segment growth in India, through deeper penetration and consumption.

The mobile operator’s data consumption rose 20 percent every quarter and has reached 24 billion MBs in this quarter.

 

Airtel’s data now contributes around 6.5 percent of the total mobile revenues against 5.7 percent in Q3 FY 2013.

Airtel had 43.5 million Data (mobile internet) customers, of which 6.4 million used 3G data services. Data ARPU reached Rs 55, helped by average data download of 187 MBs per user per month (an increase of 26 MB per user over previous quarter), and blended data realization rate being stable at 29.27 paisa per MB.

Cisco recently predicted that India is expected to have the highest IP traffic growth rate with a 62 percent CAGR from 2011 to 2016. In a second-place tie, Brazil and South Africa both have 53 percent CAGRs over the forecast period.

By 2016, the Asia Pacific region is forecast to generate the most IP traffic (40.5 exabytes per month), maintaining the top spot over North America (27.5 exabytes per month), which generated the second most amount of traffic.
