Greece telecom spectrum auction result announced

Greece telecom regulator EETT on Monday announced the results of rounds 1 and 2 of its auction of spectrum in the 800 MHz and 2,600 MHz bands for mobile services.

Following the two rounds of the auction, telecom operators such as Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind acquired one block of 2 x 50 MHz in the 800MHz band.

Cosmote paid EUR 51.5 million for each block, Vodafone EUR 51.601 million and Wind EUR 51.513 million.

Cosmote and Wind won four blocks of 2×5 Mhz in the 2600MHz frequency band. Both operators paid EUR 4.703 million per each block.

Vodafone won four blocks of 2×5 Mhz in the 2600MHz frequency band, priced at EUR 4.7 million each, and two unpaired blocks of 10MHz in the 2600MHz frequency band priced at EUR 1.3 million each.

Greece Internet penetration

Mobile Broadband penetration in Greece is currently below EU average but has a strong upward trend as mobile users are becoming data-hungry.

WIND Hellas Telecommunications in a statement said it acquired spectrum of 2 x 10MHz in the 800MHz band and 2 x 20MHz in the 2.6GHz band for EUR 121.8 million, in line with reserve prices set by the regulator. The licenses have an initial term of 15 years and will take effect on February 28, 2015.

The spectrum will support WIND’s current 4G roll-out and provide the necessary bandwidth to meet the traffic and network capacity demand of a growing market.

“We will incorporate this new spectrum into our network modernization and the current rollout of LTE services. This is a significant investment in critical spectrum that  will allow us to meet the growing consumer demand for 4G mobile broadband and provide consumers the fastest data service,” said WIND Hellas CEO and Chairman Nassos Zarkalis.

WIND Hellas will be able to make use of the newly acquired spectrum bands almost immediately as it has already begun deploying a next generation mobile network using Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology.
