Huawei in XG-PON deal with Telefonica Spain for FTTH

Telecom network vendor Huawei will deploy its XG-PON (10G-GPON) for Telefonica in Spain for its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services.

Telefonica FTTH services will enable its telecom customers to benefit from up to 1Gbps speeds. Its connection speeds will go up to ten times faster than current fiber-based services when it launches in 2015.

Huawei’s XG-PON technology is expected to deliver Internet speeds of up to 10Gbps. This means Telefonica can augment its broadband speeds beyond the 1Gbps that would be offered at launch next year.

At connection speeds of 1Gbps, Telefonica subscribers will be able to upload and download videos and movies 100 times faster than what is possible with a 10Mbps connection.

The two companies have conducted tests on Telefonica’s network where symmetrical download and upload speeds of 1Gbps were achieved using the Huawei XG-PON solution. This will allow download speeds that are ten times faster than the current speed of 100Mbps, and upload speeds that are 100 times faster than the 10Mbps upload speed possible today.

Huawei XG-PON solution will also transform online sports broadcasting for viewers. Telefonica users can select the camera angle from which they prefer to view a football match, and view the program at resolutions that will be four times sharper than transmission over conventional HD.

More than a third of all broadband customers worldwide are using Huawei’s SingleFAN (fiber access network) solutions.
