Reliance, Facebook offer free mobile Internet for select websites

Indian telecom service provider Reliance Communications in association with Facebook revealed its plans to offer free mobile Internet to access select websites.

Internet.org – supported by Facebook – provides free access to popular websites and services – on the 3G and 2G networks.

Reliance customers can access these websites with zero data charges at internet.org, or in the Internet.org Android app. Most of the services will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarat, Malayalam and Marathi in the initial phase of the launch.

Reliance Communications, the Anil Ambani-promoted telecom venture of Reliance ADAG group, will offer the services in select mobile circles including Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The partnership will add more telecom circles, more websites and services in phases.

“Through this partnership with Facebook, we aim to increase Internet inclusion and encourage more Indians to go online,” said Gurdeep Singh, chief executive officer, Consumer Business, Reliance Communications.
