Xiaomi share in smartphone market Q3 2017 chart by IDCAnalyst firms Strategy Analytics and IDC have revealed their smartphone market reports for Q3 2017, showing Xiaomi as the star performer.

Indian telecom market is the growth driver for Xiaomi. India has more than 1 billion phone users. 4G telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Idea Cellular, Vodafone and BSNL are influencing the uptake of smartphone across the country thanks to their popular data plans.

IDC said Xiaomi is continuing as the 5th largest smartphone vendor. Xiaomi had the strongest year-over-year growth. Xiaomi more than doubled its shipments from 13.6 million in Q3 2016 to 27.6 million in Q3 2017. Success in the India smartphone market was the biggest catalyst for growth of Xiaomi — supported by mega online festival sales in September.

Strategy Analytics said Xiaomi soared 91 percent, taking fifth place with 27.7 million shipments for a record 7 percent smartphone marketshare in Q3 2017, up from 4 percent a year ago. Xiaomi’s range of Android models, such as the Redmi Note 4, is proving popular in India, snatching volumes from competitors such as Lenovo and Reliance Jio.

Strategy Analytics said smartphone shipments grew 5 percent annually to reach 393 million units in Q3 2017.

IDC said smartphone OEMs shipped 373.1 million smartphones, registering a growth of 2.7 percent year over year, and 7.4 percent from the second quarter.

Main vendors

Samsung has 21 percent global smartphone market share. Samsung shipped 83.4 million (+11 percent) smartphones in Q3 2017. This was Samsung’s fastest growth rate for almost 4 years. Samsung’s growth is being driven by strong demand for its A, J and S series models across Latin America, India and elsewhere.

Samsung reported dip in revenue for the mobile division. The decrease was caused by a higher blend of more affordable models in the product mix as entry-level, and mid-range devices from the J-Series and A-series continued to drive most of the shipments in both emerging and developed markets.

Apple has 12 percent share. Apple shipped 46.7 million (+3 percent) smartphones. Despite a delayed launch of iPhone X model, new iPhone 8 portfolio was relatively well received in major countries such as Germany and China.

Huawei has 10 percent smartphone share in Q3 2017. Huawei is performing well across Asia, Europe and Africa with popular Android models such as the P10 and Nova 2.

OPPO shipped 31.4 million (+45 percent) smartphones, taking share from major rivals like ZTE and TCL-Alcatel across China, India and Europe.

“The fourth quarter will be extremely competitive as vendors will fight it out to win over holiday shoppers,” said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

IDC previously forecast the fourth quarter to grow at less than 1 percent as initial supply constraints surrounding the iPhone X and higher than normal prices on many flagships could lead to consumers playing the waiting game until prices come down after the holidays or opt for affordable devices.

IDC said Huawei’s new Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and Porsche Design Mate 10 will will challenge both Apple and Samsung at the top of the market regarding premium flagship offerings as well as in the race for overall worldwide market dominance.

Xiaomi offered huge discounts on most of the models along with the aggressive bank offers and easy financing options to ensure more share.
