Ericsson to demo 5G use cases at CES 2017

Ericsson in SwedenTelecom equipment and software maker Ericsson will be demonstrating 5G use cases, and business models at CES 2017.

At Ericsson’s booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the CES 2017 from January 5-8, 2017, the telecom giant will show attendees how networks, media and IT work in concert to improve daily lives and work.

“CES is always a fantastic stage for innovation, so we are excited to be sharing the latest connectivity technology, 5G, with partners and our mutual customers,” said Ulf Ewaldsson, chief strategy and technology officer of Ericsson.

Ericsson will provide more than 30 demonstrations of new and emerging technologies at its booth (#10939 in Tech East).

There will be interactive sports experiences using in-car video, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Ericsson will show examples of smart city projects, smart vehicles, more efficient and automated manufacturing, connected forests and transformational TV experiences at CES 2017.

Technology partners including Intel, Qualcomm and Volvo Cars will demo the innovative solutions they have co-created with Ericsson.

Rob Topol, general manager of 5G business and technology within Intel’s Communications and Devices Group, earlier said it expects 5G trials will pick up steam in 2017.

One big advancement will be the prototype devices used for testing. “You will see us move from testing with larger trial platforms, to using more mobile and segment-specific form factors,” said Rob Topol.

4G wireless largely focused on making smartphones faster. But telecom industry leaders look to 5G to provide the higher data rates (1-20 Gbps), lower latency and capacity needed for the Internet of Things (IoT), new service models and immersive new experiences.

Ericsson will demo the latest 5G capabilities that operators will introduce, including higher bandwidth, lower latency, greater density, lower energy requirements, increased security, network slicing and cellular for Massive IoT (Internet of Things) technologies.

Ericsson will use its broadcast technology to live-stream interviews from the “Ericsson Skybox” for those who prefer to stay at home.

Ewaldsson will discuss uses of 5G with guests from SK Telecom and BMW during a CES SuperSession on Thursday, January 5, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
