The Indian 4G operator demonstrated the 5G use cases at the telecom event in India over the live 5G network in Navi Mumbai and in Delhi. The 5G use cases leveraged the gigabit speed and ultra-low latency capabilities of 5G. Remote operation of machines such as robotic arms and vehicles and possibilities enabled through virtual reality (VR) was at display.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, on Thursday said India will be ready for 5G in 2020.

Airtel, the leading telecom operator in India, has also demonstrated 5G use cases with the support of technology vendors Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia.

“Operators should receive incentives to accelerate the deployment of deep fiber as this lays the foundation for digital transformation, enabling us to seamlessly transition to 5G,” Mathew Oommen, president, Reliance Jio, said.

Nunzio Mirtillo, head of South East Asia, Oceania and India at Ericsson, said the company is taking a big step towards making 5G a reality in India by showing use cases that can find application in sectors such as mining, education, and healthcare.

Ericsson and Jio demonstrated 5G connected car use case and remote operation and control of a car that is connected over a live 5G network on 3.5 GHz band at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The use case was made accessible at the IMC for remote driving and showcasing assistance through 5G edge computing.

Jio has demonstrated VR-assisted driving using 5G network slicing capabilities. Bus driver managed the bus assisted by the live stream rendered on a 5G-connected VR headset. The live streaming was done over Ericsson’s 28 GHz 5G network in Navi Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Fujitsu and Ericsson announced their agreement to deliver 5G network solutions and services. The two companies will develop this based on their combined portfolios – radio access and core network – for the 5G market in Japan.

Fujitsu and Ericsson aim to initially provide systems and solutions for the Japanese market, and seek to expand their collaboration to other customers globally.
