NAB Show 2014: TV industry to grow to $750 bn by 2020 from $530 bn in 2013, says Ericsson

At the NAB Show 2014, telecom network vendor Ericsson today announced Ericsson Media Vision 2020 that says the TV industry will grow to $750 billion by 2020 from $530 billion in 2013.

There will be more than 50 billion connected devices, of which 15 billion will be video-enabled, will rely on mobile IP (internet protocol) networks dominated by video. IP will accelerate the ongoing shift of consumers to use on-demand access to content to 50 percent of their consumption.

Ericsson said the global landscape will include 9 billion people, over 8 billion mobile broadband subscriptions and 1.5 billion homes with digital television in 2020.

The Ericsson report said mobile broadband is essential in all regions and fundamental in emerging regions.

Consumers will value simplicity and perceive value in a single bill. The essential need for broadband will enable separation of propositions from broadband access and content.

Delivery of content over-the-top becomes applicable to all TV service providers or content owners as a way of reaching consumers, and enhancing established broadcast delivery platforms.

The distribution of revenues however shifts between content owners, broadcasters, TV service providers and network providers, especially as brands adapt advertising focus.

Ericsson would unveil its Next Generation Playout solution.

Ericsson’s Next Generation Playout enables broadcast services customers to access to data centers, with signal distribution through co-located carriers, distributors and connectivity providers. This connectivity network, coupled with a software-defined workflow, helps broadcasters to overcome the geographic dependencies.

Next Generation Playout enables faster time to market and a whole new set of over-the-top (OTT) and video on demand (VOD) distribution possibilities, as well as benefits such as increased flexibility, improved service delivery and reduced upfront and operating costs.

Ericsson said broadcasters that opt for managed Next Generation Playout will be able to reduce their operational expenditure by consolidating their operations and focusing on creating more effective workflows and processes.

Users can monitor Next Generation Playout remotely. The new solution is available as either a managed or a hosted service.
