TP-LINK extends marketshare lead in Wi-Fi equipment

In first quarter 2011, worldwide revenue for the Wi-Fi
network equipment market decreased by 1.2 percent quarter-over-quarter while
shipments increased by 3.8 percent. However, year-over-year revenue was up over
24 percent, according to In-Stat.

From a marketshare perspective, TP-LINK continues to hold
the top spot while NETGEAR has jumped over D-LINK, in terms of unit shipments.
Regionally NETGEAR leads in unit shipments in North America with Linksys at
number two. In Europe, TP-LINK, NETGEAR, and D-LINK account for about 65
percent of the market in terms of total unit WLAN.

“WLAN shipments and revenues increased over the last
year but a more significant trend in data is the transition to 802.11n
technology from 802.11g. In 1Q10 802.11g had more shipments than any other
technology in every region, but a year later 802.11n is the majority everywhere
except for our ‘Rest of World’ category,” said Brad Shaffer, analyst at
In-Stat.
