Cisco, Citrix, F5, Riverbed to benefit from WAN optimization and app delivery controllers growth

By Telecom
Lead Team:
The application delivery controller market is forecast to
exceed $2 billion in 2016, while the WAN Optimization market is
forecast to exceed $1.5 billion in the same period.

These growths
are expected to be in large part due to data center evolution, led by cloud and
virtualization, according to Dell’Oro Group.

The report
also indicated that in each market, virtual appliances will steadily build
larger shares during each year of the forecast period.

Cisco, Citrix,
F5, and Riverbed are the vendors who currently offer both Application Delivery
Controllers and WAN Optimization in their
offerings.

“We
continue to see vendors offer additional functionality in data center products
to broaden their reach into adjacent markets,” said Alan Weckel,
Senior Director of Data Center Appliance Market Research at Dell’Oro Group.

The Dell’Oro Group said that presently vendors are embedding security into
application delivery controllers and building storage protocols into WAN
Optimization devices. This is a trend that is expected to continue throughout
the forecast period.

Vendors will
continue to develop and acquire technology that fits natively on existing
platforms. It is possible that as these markets expand and the boundaries
among them become greyer, vendors may offer new platforms in holistic markets.

Recently, Infonetics Research announced that global revenue for data center network
equipment is up 12 percent sequentially in Q3 2011, with all segments posting
growth, including general purpose, purpose-built and blade data center Ethernet
switches, application delivery controllers (ADCs) and WAN optimization
appliances.

The data
center network equipment market is also up 12 percent year-over-year (from Q3
2010).
