Universiti Teknologi Malaysia unveils mobile hotspot bus

Telecom Lead Asia: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
(UTM) has introduced a new Mobile Hotspot bus that can connect 200
people to the Internet at the same time.

The university has collaborated with Maxis and bus
provider Mara Liner to launch this new Hotspot bus.

Equipped with modems, the new Mobile Hotspot can connect
people within a 100 meter radius of the vehicle.

The vehicle combines Internet access with the smart
antenna technology produced by UTM Wireless Communication Centre (WCC). Maxis
sponsored the SIM cards for this new product.

“The WCC Mobile Hotspot is UTM’s latest technology product that is
overseen by the Innovation and Commercialization Centre. It will be
commercialized by the private sector,” said Prof Dr Zaini Ujang, UTM
Vice-Chancellor Datuk.

The university conducted a pilot project, which took
three months to ensure that the mobile hotspot quality is stable and
consistent.

UTM now plans to use the new technology all its buses as
well as introduce it to Mara Liner buses, airport limousines and other
transport services.

“The use of mobile Wi-Fi on public buses will be a boon for bus
operators as it would enable them to attract more passengers,” Zaini
added.

The UTM Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) also
created products like the smart antenna technology and the flat antenna,
which is more effectiveness than the conventional antenna.
