Chinese social networking firm selects Syniverse to offer international SMS capabilities

Telecom Lead Asia: Renren, a real-name social network in China, has selected Syniverse to offer international SMS capabilities.

“Mobile is an area of critical growth for social networks, and it has become essential to connect users to each other wherever they are,” said Syniverse Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Windy Zou Kohl. “Syniverse is privileged to serve top players in the social networking space, and we look forward to using our experience to help Renren grow its global footprint and user engagement.”

Renren’s platform enables its more than 154 million users to share information and content, play games, listen to music, shop, and access entertainment.

Leveraging Syniverse’s Mobile Enterprise Services, Renren will extend its capabilities to mobile users worldwide, allowing them to activate Renren accounts instantly upon registration by using authentication codes sent to their local mobile phones via SMS.

Syniverse makes mobile work for more than 900 mobile operators, cable and Internet providers, and enterprises in over 160 countries.

Recently, TelecomLead.com reported that Syniverse has expanded its association with NTT DOCOMO, to provide the operator with complete Wi-Fi data and financial clearing solutions.

The extended relationship with the Japanese mobile operator marks important milestone in the growth of Syniverse’s Wi-Fi services. Under the deal, Syniverse will enable the operator to follow industry standards and processes for Wi-Fi roaming. The process will relieve NTT DOCOMO from internal operations and conversions that would otherwise be required and simplifying both wholesale and retail billing.
