Walkie Talkie app Voxer touches one billion operations per day powered by Basho Riak

Basho Technologies, a provider of
distributed data store technologies, and Voxer, the Walkie Talkie application
for smartphones, announced that Voxer has reached top in application rankings
and support more than a billion operations per day.

During December 2011, Voxer saw a
record-breaking user growth and was ranked at the top of its category on both
the Apple App Store and the Android Market. Voxer is built on top of Riak, a
distributed NoSQL database, available open source, and designed for massive
scale and continuous availability.

“Voxer has witnessed substantial
growth as users discover the increased efficiency and fun of direct voice
communication to their friends and colleagues. To meet the challenges of
extraordinary scale, we needed to have extraordinary infrastructure. Riak has
been a critical asset to Voxer, supporting growth from millions of daily
operations to billions, practically overnight. Basho’s support organization
performs as an extension of our own technical staff,” said Tom Katis, Voxer’s CEO.

To support this growth, the number of servers
running Riak grew by 10 times, which required spanning multiple
Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) providers, including Joyent, a Basho partner.

“The opportunities for Voxer’s
continued growth are immense, from speeding decision-making and communication
across large enterprises and government organizations, to helping family and
friends stay closer. We look forward to continuing to serve as a long-term
critical partner for Voxer,” said Donald J. Rippert, president and CEO,
Basho Technologies.

Basho Technologies recently announced that it joined the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and will
become a voting member of the Cloud Storage Initiative. The Cloud Storage
Initiative (CSI) represents a collective effort of industry leaders committed
to driving the growth and success of the emerging cloud storage market.
