iPhone 7 top selling smartphone, OPPO R9 becomes third model

Top smartphone model in the worldApple iPhone 7 has emerged as the world’s best-selling smartphone model in the first quarter of 2017. OPPO R9s shipped 9 million units becoming the world’s third most popular smartphone model.

Smartphone shipments reached 353.3 million units in Q1 2017. The top-five most popular models accounted for 1 in 6 of all smartphones shipped, said Strategy Analytics in its latest report.

Apple iPhone 7 shipped 21.5 million units capturing 6 percent share, due to a compelling blend of user-friendly design, extensive supporting apps, and retail availability for the device.

Apple iPhone 7 Plus shipped 17.4 million units for second place and 5 percent share. Apple accounts for two of the world’s top five smartphone models.

OPPO R9s shipped 8.9 million units for third place and 3 percent share. OPPO is largely unknown in the Western world, but its brand is wildly popular in China and growing rapidly across India. The R9s is OPPO’s flagship 4G device with features such as dual-SIM connectivity and fingerprint security.

Samsung Galaxy J3 captured 2 percent smartphone share and fourth place, while Galaxy J5 took 1 percent share to become the world’s fifth most popular model. Samsung’s J3 and J5 are midrange devices that sell very well across Europe and Asia.

INDIA

Apple iPhone 5S has emerged as the top premium smartphone in seven states while other versions of iOS-driven devices occupy the top five premium spots in non-metro states.

In Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, iPhone 5s is ranked as the top premium smartphone while iPhone 6 occupies the second place in these states, except West Bengal where Samsung S4 Mini is the second-most favourite smartphone in the premium category.

The latest from Apple, iPhone 7 is ranked at number five in Delhi and Gujarat while OnePlus 3T is ranked fourth in Karnataka, said the data provided by Mobilytiks, a big data analytics programme in India for mobile handsets introduced by market research firm CyberMedia Research (CMR).

From Android stack, Samsung and OnePlus are the only brands that made it to the list of top 5.
