Samsung aims to sell 20 mn Galaxy M smartphones

Samsung is targeting to sell 20 million units of its Galaxy M series smartphones, which are available only on e-commerce channels in India, by the end of this year.
Samsung Galaxy A8+ in IndiaSamsung introduced Galaxy M series in January last year targeting India’s young population and Galaxy M smartphones are available only on leading online channels in the country.

Samsung surpassed Vivo for the second slot by shipping 4.8 million smartphones during the second quarter of 2020. Galaxy M21, manufactured at its factory in Noida, was among the nation’s top 5 shipped models in 2Q20 and most of its online-exclusive Galaxy M series was opened to offline channels, though at higher prices, IDC said.

“We aim to sell 20 million (2 crore) Galaxy M series devices by the end of this year. We are grateful to our consumers for the success of Galaxy M series in India,” said Asim Warsi, senior vice president of Samsung India.

Samsung has to date launched eight Galaxy M series devices in the country, with Galaxy M being the latest one that comes with a 7000mAh battery, IANS reported.

The Galaxy M series, in particular the Galaxy M30s device, performed well in the online segment last year, helping revive Samsung’s online share.

Samsung stood in second place in the online channel with a share of 22.8 percent and was the leader in the offline channel with 29.1 percent share in 2Q20. The brand also partnered with Benow and Facebook, enabling offline retailers to start sales using digital platforms, says the latest IDC report.

Online channels are likely to account for a highest-ever 45 percent share of smartphone sales in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 situation.

The M series is doing quite well and helped Samsung in gaining share in online channels. Largest battery, innovative specifications with strong value proposition are some of the factors which contributed to its success, said Prachir Singh, senior research analyst at Counterpoint.

The new M51 offers 7,000mAh battery, a 6.7-inch Infinity-O display with Super AMOLED technology, Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G Octa-Core processor for multitasking and 6GB RAM and 128GB storage (expandable to 512GB via microSD card).

The smartphone will be available on Amazon.in, Samsung.com and select retail stores on September 18.
