Telecom Lead India: Top 10 mobile phone vendors in first
quarter of 2012 include Samsung, Nokia, Apple, ZTE, LG, Huawei Device,
Research in Motion, Motorola, Sony Mobile Communications and HTC.

 

Global sales of mobile phones to end users reached 419.1
million units in the first quarter of 2012, a 2 per cent decline from the first
quarter of 2011, according to Gartner.

 

The market analysis firm said that this is the first time
since the second quarter of 2009 that the market exhibited a decline.

 

During the quarter, Samsung displaced Nokia and became #1
mobile handset vendor. Samsung’s mobile phone sales reached 86.6 million units,
a 25.9 percent increase from last year.

 

Furthermore, on the smartphone front, Samsung with 38
million smartphones worldwide bagged the top position from Apple.

 

In addition, Samsung’s Android-based smartphone sales in
the first quarter of 2012 represented more than 40 percent of Android-based
smartphone sales worldwide; no other vendors achieved more than a 10 percent
share of the market.

 

The research firm revealed that sales of smartphones is
driving mobile device market growth, reaching 144.4 million units in the first
quarter of 2012, up 44.7 percent year-over-year.

 

Nokia’s mobile handset sales reached 83.2 million units,
a 22.7 percent decrease from the first quarter of 2011.

 

Apple’s sales grew 96.2 percent in the first quarter of
2012 as iPhone 4S expanded into new markets and carriers. Apple sold 33.1
million handsets during the quarter. With more than 5 million units, China
became the second-largest market for Apple after the U.S.

 

RIM sold 9.9 million mobile handsets in the first quarter
of 2012, with its global share declining to 2.4 percent as competition
increased in its international market strongholds.

 

During the quarter ZTE has also increased its market
share to 4.3 percent with 17.4 million handsets sold, followed by LG with 3.5
percent market share with total 14.7 million handsets.

 

Global mobile phone shipments to reach 2.2 billion units by
2017, feature phones set to plunge

 

Global annual mobile phone shipments will grow at a CAGR
of 5.5 percent between 2011 and 2017, reaching 2.2 billion units.

 

Ovum predicts that smartphones will surpass the overall
market for mobile phones, growing at a CAGR of 21.0 percent between 2011 and
2017 to reach 1.7 billion units. This will account for 77 percent of the
overall mobile phone market globally in 2017.
