BlackBerry PlayBook to be available in 1000 retail stores across 8 cities in India

Research In Motion (RIM) announced the launch of the
BlackBerry PlayBook tablet in India. The BlackBerry PlayBook comes in an
ultra-portable design and features performance with real-time multitasking and
symmetrical multiprocessing.

It delivers high-fidelity web browsing including support
for Adobe Flash, as well as high-definition (HD) multimedia, advanced security
features and out-of-the-box enterprise support.

The BlackBerry PlayBook
tablet features Wi-Fi support and is available in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB
models. It will be distributed nationally through Redington India and Ingram
Micro, initially in 1000 retail stores across 8 cities and then expanding to
other parts of the country.  Accessories for the BlackBerry PlayBook will
also be available in these stores.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is an incredibly powerful and
innovative product in the growing tablet marketplace.  It’s perfect for
both large organizations and individuals, and it gives users an unmatched
mobile experience,” said Frenny Bawa, managing director, India – Research In
Motion.

With the BlackBerry PlayBook we are stepping into a new
era of mobile computing and opening up new and even more exciting opportunities
for developers and content publishers with support for Adobe Flash, Adobe
Mobile AIR and HTML-5,” Bawa added.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is a multitasking tablet that
looks and feels great in the hand, measuring less than half an inch thick and
weighing less than a pound. It includes a vivid 7″ high resolution display, 1
GHz dual-core processor and the new BlackBerry Tablet OS, which delivers a
highly-responsive, fluid touch screen experience.

It comes with multimedia features including dual
High-Definition (HD) cameras for video capture and conferencing. It has an
HDMI-out port for presenting on external displays and offers rich stereo sound
with a media player that rivals the best in the industry.

“There are a many different OS based Tablets have
been launched in India with iOS, Windows, and Android platform but none of them
have been able to penetrate deeper into the enterprise market as its still is
in very nascent stages. Though RIM has substantial following in Smartphones,
but tablets still must prove themselves to the RIM followers,” said Vishal
Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner.

Enterprises are still warming up to the idea of Tablet
adoptions and it’s not happening at any significant pace as of now. Indian
enterprises take a longer cycle to move to devices like tablet PCs and while a
few are beginning to warm up to such devices. Also in the enterprise segment
10-inch Tablets are preferred, due to its ability to support more-robust
two-hand typing and larger viewing areas for apps.

Playbook is less competitive at comparable price points,
due to the lack of a strong application and ecosystem. Enterprise support for
the PlayBook is based on BlackBerry Bridge, a system where secure information
remains on the BlackBerry, but is displayed on the PlayBook through a Bluetooth
connection.

RIM’s security model has not yet been ported to QNX,
thus the need to bridge to the BlackBerry which means that playbook does not
have standalone access to secure corporate email that Blackberry is known for,
unless it is connected to a BlackBerry phone using a BlackBerry Bridge that
works on Bluetooth technology. Playbook also does not have 3G or other
carrier-based mode of internet access, for which the user have to be in a Wi-Fi
environment which is a challenge to real mobility,” Tripathi added.
