Micromax leads Indian tablets market with 18.4% share in Q2

Telecom Lead India: Micromax leads the Indian tablets market with 18.4 percent share in the second quarter of 2012.

Samsung is in second position with 13.3 percent market share.

Apple has a market share of 12.3 percent in terms of unit shipments during the 2Q 2012.

India tablet market sales touched 0.55 million units in 2Q 2012, up 673 percent y-o-y.

Entry of new tablet vendors and introduction of offerings from existing vendors at low to medium price points have contributed to the significant growth.

Close to 90 vendors launched their tablets till 2Q 2012.

The ASV of the tablets in 2Q 2012 has dropped to little above INR 13,000 from INR 26,000 in 1Q 2012, as a majority of vendors in early 2012 launched their products in the INR 5,000-10,000 price range.

“During 2Q 2012, 47.4 percent of tablet sales were from new entrants in the market with a strong focus on addressing application areas in the Education and Entertainment segments. This trend demonstrates clearly that vendors are positioning their devices at India’s youth,” said Faisal Kawoosa, lead analyst, CMR Telecoms Practice.

More and more vendors are launching devices based on the Android OS. The share of devices based on other operating systems like Windows, iOS and QNX are expected to rise in future in view of the recent announcement of the Microsoft Windows Surface Tablet, the global launch of the Apple iPad 3 and reduction in BlackBerry Playbook prices.

Tablet vendors will be launching segments specific segments such as healthcare, retail and e-Governance.

IDC recently said Windows tablets including Windows 7 tablets, Windows RT and Windows 8 tablets are expected to grow from about 1 percent of the market in 2011 to 4 percent in 2012 globally. Windows tablets will have 11 percent market share by 2016. Apple iOS will grow from 57.2 percent in 2011 to 60 percent in 2012 and 58 percent by 2016. Android will slip from 38.9 percent to 35.3 percent, declining to 30.5 percent by 2016.

Meanwhile, Strategy Analytics said Apple’s tablet market share has improved from 62 percent in Q2 FY11 to 68 percent in Q2 FY12 with 17 million tablet units shipped. In Q2 FY11, Apple shipped 9.3 million table units. Android’s market share remains stagnant at 29.3 percent in Q2 FY12 with 7.3 million units shipped. In Q2 FY11, global Android tablet shipments were 4.4 million.
