Alcatel-Lucent cuts its carbon footprint by more than 22 percent since 2008

Telecom
Lead Europe
: Alcatel-Lucent said it has cut its carbon footprint by more than
22 percent since 2008.

The
telecom equipment major has a target of reducing carbon footprint to 50 percent
of its 2008 level by 2020. At the end of 2011, Alcatel-Lucent achieved 22
percent of this target.

115
energy optimization projects are underway at 27 of its largest facilities.

In
2011, Alcatel-Lucent scored 89 out of 100 possible points.

In
2011, the company continued efforts to cut back those emissions through
initiatives involving entire workforce achieving reductions of 11 percent by
the end of the year.

Its
longer-term goal is to cut direct carbon emissions – those that fall into
the GHG Protocol’s Scope 1 and 2 categories1 – to half of their
2008 levels by 2020. Scope 3 emissions (those created through our activities
but not from sources under our direct control) aren’t part of that target. The
company invested in reducing GHGs throughout its supply chain as well.

Alcatel-Lucent
has also created an Enterprise Carbon Accounting tool that helps streamline and
automate GHG data collection, identify opportunities for improvement, and
identify best practices for reducing emissions.

Between
2008 and 2010, Alcatel-Lucent improved products’ functional energy consumption
by at least 20 percent, with many of its solutions exceeding that target.

Alcatel-Lucent
will increase the energy efficiency of key products by another 25 percent by
the end of 2012.
