Aviat Networks to supply CTR 8540 microwave router to Osnova Telecom and Entel

Microwave vendor Aviat Networks received orders from Osnova Telecom of the Russian Federation and Entel in Chile for its newly launched Aviat CTR 8540 microwave router.

The CTR 8540 microwave router, a new microwave platform, includes a fully featured IP/MPLS router. The company said the CTR 8540 is a unique product with a combination of microwave transport, Layer 2 Carrier Ethernet and Layer 3 IP/MPLS routing.

New features

Aviat Networks’ new microwave router integrates an IP/MPLS router with a high-capacity Ethernet microwave radio.  Because the microwave router combines the functionality of five separate boxes, the implications for mobile operators are three-fold.

Firstly it reduces complexity on their network.  Secondly it simplifies management of their network. And thirdly, it reduces the costs of their backhaul network.

The microwave router offers 50 percent more radio and twice as many Ethernet ports (up to 4Gbps per link) as any other microwave solution. It will give Layer 3 intelligence at the edge of the network, enabling new access services, particularly for the enterprise market.

“The Aviat CTR microwave router is a great foundation for a long-term partnership with our nationwide LTE operator,” said Mikhail Petrov, CEO, Osnova Telecom of the Russian Federation.

CTR, which has an open, software-based architecture, can be deployed now as a Layer 2 microwave solution. Its IP/MPLS functionality capability can be added when required via a software upgrade. The company said CTR leverages MPLS traffic engineering to offer SDN backhaul resource management and optimization, which provides a practical migration path to SDN architecture over time.

Michael Pangia, president and CEO, Aviat Networks, said: “It combines the functionality of five separate devices and supports 50 percent more radio interfaces and twice as many Gigabit Ethernet ports as any other microwave solution and delivers up to 4 Gbps of aggregate capacity per link. This places CTR at the head of the microwave market, even before you add the L3 capability.”

Entel on CTR 8540

Entel, an incumbent carrier in Chile, places importance on reducing the number of devices it provisions at each cell site to save space and money.

As a router, CTR 8540 will enable a range of new IP and VPN services for its mobile backhaul and enterprise applications.

Juan Andrés Guzmán Barrios, chief of area connectivity and transmission engineering, Entel Chile, said: “Unlike other microwave radios that require adding an expensive, separate IP/MPLS router, CTR 8540 is the only product we found that integrates the microwave radio and IP routing features we need.”

On 13 March 2014, Aviat Networks announced an expanded managed services agreement with MTN Nigeria. Aviat Networks will manage the flow of material into Aviat-controlled facilities on behalf of MTN Nigeria.
