Ciena signs converged packet optical deal with Telefonica

Ciena today announced its converged packet optical solutions deal with Telefonica to support a new nationwide backbone network throughout the United Kingdom.

With this 100G network, O2 aims for more flexibility to control and configure its network and satisfy demands for high-bandwidth mobile, video and cloud services.

This new backbone network will connect major UK cities, including London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Liverpool, and enable O2 to deliver web-scale services to support massive growth in data center and network virtualization demands, said Ciena.

The telecom network — powered by 6500 Packet-Optical platform and WaveLogic 3 Coherent Optical Processors from Ciena — will accommodate several terabits of traffic in O2’s backbone and respond dynamically to any demand changes. The ROADM-based network provides low latency connectivity ensuring a superior end user experience.

O2 is deploying the 6500 platform equipped with packet switch modules, which enable integration of packet and optical technologies to reduce total cost of operation and time-to-market for new services.

Ciena said its OneControl Unified Management System will provide service visualization and network diagnostics, resulting in the efficient use of critical network assets and bandwidth optimization.

“By selecting Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and unified management solutions we will ensure that we have a high-speed and scalable network that can meet our customers’ demands and provide the foundation needed for high bandwidth consuming services,” said Brendan O’Reilly, CTO of O2.
