Digicel taps Aviat for microwave backhaul

Aviat Networks
Telecom network operator Digicel has selected Aviat to implement a redundant microwave ring backhaul using CTR 8540 microwave routers and spilt-mount trunk STR 600 radios with IP/MPLS capabilities.

The decision to make investment in microwave backhaul equipment was part of Digicel strategy to expand high-speed broadband to more remote locations in the Pacific.

The investment in microwave networking solution from Aviat will support Digicel to drive cost efficiency by minimizing hardware and power needs, while maximizing the available network capacity and availability.

“Network quality and reliability is our highest priority and with extensive expertise and presence in the region, I am confident the Aviat team will meet our highest expectations,” said Michael Murphy, chief executive officer of Digicel Pacific.

Digicel, a global telecom service provider with networks in 32 countries, has business presence across the Caribbean, Central America and the Pacific.

The US-based microwave networking technology solutions company said Digicel’s 189km microwave link connects the main island of Tonga (Tongatapu) with two of its outer islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai. As per the deal between Aviat and Digicel, the world’s longest microwave link — servicing a public mobile phone network — uses Aviat’s CTR microwave router platform and engineering capabilities.

“With a highly skilled team of microwave networking experts, Aviat Networks has broad experience engineering solutions for the challenging environments of the Pacific region,” said Michael Pangia, president and CEO of Aviat Networks.
