Nokia powers Frontier’s G.fast technology deployment

broadband-in-uk-and-technologyFrontier Communications are deploying G.fast technology to expand gigabit ultra-broadband access across Connecticut – in association with Nokia.

Nokia, the Finland-based telecom equipment maker, said G.fast technology enables Norwalk, US-based Frontier to roll out fiber-like broadband speeds to customers living in apartment buildings and deliver new IPTV and data service packages.

Frontier will use Nokia’s G.fast technology to bring fiber-like speeds to customers without installing new, in-building fiber infrastructure. Built-in vectoring technology reduces cross-talk interference that impacts data speeds over copper networks,

Nokia G.fast solution will allow Frontier to use the last few hundred meters of existing copper located in buildings to deliver ultra-broadband access to customers.

Nokia’s G.fast technology enables Frontier to complement its fiber network footprint and deploy fiber to the basement of an apartment building instead of each individual apartment unit.

G.fast solution, leveraging Software Defined Network (SDN) capabilities and compliant with NetConf and Yang models, enables Frontier Communications to accelerate the deployment of G.fast Internet by automating the management process and simplifying provisioning models.

“Nokia’s G.fast solution will help Frontier quickly bring ultra-broadband access to customers by using the existing copper twisted pair wiring that is often found in apartment buildings,” said Steve Gable, chief technology officer of Frontier.

Without the deployment of Nokia’s G.fast solution, Frontier will be forced to drill holes and pull fiber into each apartment unit. The entire process will be time consuming and challenging for broadband customers.

Federico Guillen, president of Nokia’s Fixed Networks Business Group, said with the advancements in today’s copper technologies, operators can offer fiber-like speeds to enhance experience of their broadband customers.

Nokia claims it has completed more than 40 customer trials for G.fast technology. In addition, 10 customers are commercially deploying G.fast technology around the world. Nokia said its G.fast technology customers include Openreach, Chunghwa Telecom, A1 Telekom Austria and Energia Communications.
