Nokia’s Networks business set to shine with 5G focus

Nokia’s Networks business reported 4.888 billion euro (+1 percent) revenue in the third quarter of 2018.

Nokia’s Networks business generated revenue of 2.125 billion euros (+1 percent) from Broadband Networks, 1.380 billion euros (+2 percent) from Global Services and 1.383 billion euros from IP Networks and Applications.

Nokia’s revenue of 1.043 (+4 percent) billion euros came from Asia-Pacific including India, 1.040 billion euros from Europe, 536 million euros (–15 percent) from Greater China, 312 million euros (+3 percent) from Latin America 428 million euros (–10 percent) from Middle East & Africa and 1.531 billion euros (+12 percent) from North America.

“Our early progress in 5G is extremely strong, we continue to increase our investment in this critical technology, and our win rate for new deals suggests that we are in a very good competitive position,” said Rajeev Suri, president and CEO of Nokia.

Nokia reaffirmed its outlook for the full year, saying networks would deliver an operating margin of 6-9 percent.

Nokia network deals and updates

Nokia announced a $3.5 billion 5G network deal with T-Mobile to accelerate the deployment of a nationwide 5G network in the US.

AT&T in September named Nokia as one of its 5G network suppliers with the US operator’s announcement to introduce mobile 5G in five additional cities – Houston, Jacksonville, Louisville, New Orleans, and San Antonio – this year.

Nokia and Sprint in September gave the first live demonstration in the US of a 5G New Radio connection over a dual mode-capable Massive MIMO radio.

Earlier in the quarter, Verizon and Nokia completed the first transmission of a 3GPP New Radio 5G signal to a receiver situated in a moving vehicle. The test followed the companies’ completion of a series of outdoor data sessions over the 5G New Radio standard.

Idea Cellular in Delhi started to deploy Nokia’s cloud-native core technology as part of the operator’s digitalization effort to meet increasing data and mobile broadband demand. Ooredoo Myanmar selected Nokia to secure its telecom and ICT networks against cyber threats.

Nokia WING (Worldwide IoT Network Grid) momentum continued with Tele2 IoT launching a new global IoT platform, EnCore, making it the first operator to offer commercial IoT services to enterprises using Nokia WING.

Nokia and Tencent signed an agreement to accelerate 5G webscale research and applications to benefit Internet users in China.

Telia Company chose Nokia’s NetGuard Identity Access Manager to enhance security across the operator’s networks in Sweden and Finland.

Nokia Software won orders from British Telecom, Telenor One Europe, STC, Telefonica UK and Sky.
