Apple iPad Air 2 enables users to switch telecoms by swiping icon

Apple iPad Air 2 — announced on Thursday in the U.S. — will enable mobile users to switch telecom operators by swiping an icon across the screen of the tablet.

A neutral Apple SIM card installed in the tablet will allow customers to sign up for short-term service plans and switch carriers using their iPad, Reuters reported.

The SIM card supports AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint networks. For service from the largest U.S. carrier, Verizon Wireless, customers need to install a separate Verizon SIM card.

The feature allows customers to switch wireless carriers based on their monthly needs, like bigger data, more reliable connections or cheaper prices.

Apple said subscribers traveling can also plug into international carriers’ networks and purchase temporary contracts through the iPad.

The new iPad Air 2 offers Touch ID to enable users to unlock their iPad with the touch of a finger and make purchases securely within apps using Apple Pay.

iPad Air 2 features Apple-designed A8X chip to offer 40 percent increase in CPU performance, 2.5 times the graphics performance of iPad Air and up to 10-hour battery life.

iPad Air 2 delivers better connectivity with 802.11ac Wi-Fi with Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology for 2.8 times the Wi-Fi performance of iPad Air at data rates up to 866 Mbps.

In addition, iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular integrates more LTE bands and comes with expanded LTE for up to 50 percent faster cellular connections.

iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi models will be available for a retail price of $499 for the 16GB model, $599 for the 64GB model and $699 for the 128GB model. iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models will be available for a retail price of $629 for the 16GB model, $729 for the 64GB model and $829 for the 128GB model.
