Despite pressure, BSNL leads broadband market with 57% share

By Telecom Lead Team: The government run mobile service
provider BSNL holds 56.94 percent of the market share with reported subscriber
base of 11.95 million Internet subscribers at the end of September 2011 as
against 11.63 million at the end of June 2011.

 

Reliance Communications is at second position with 2.68
million followed by MTNL at 2.48 million.

 

Top 10 ISPs together hold 94.57 percent of the total
Internet subscriber base, according to TRAI.  

 

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is the most preferred
technology used by the Service Providers to provide broadband services and it
constitutes 85.44 percent of total broadband subscribers, followed by cable
modem technology (5.77 percent) and Ethernet LAN (5.36 percent).

 

There are 20.99 million Internet subscribers at the end
of September 2011 as compared to 20.33 million at the end of June 2011,
registering a growth of 3.25 percent. Apart from this, 373.84 million wireless
subscribers have subscribed to data services, as reported by the wireless
service providers.

 

Number of broadband subscribers increased from 12.35
million at the end of June 2011 to 12.83 million at the end of September 2011,
registering a quarterly growth of 3.93 percent and y-o-y growth of 24.54
percent.

 

Share of broadband subscription in total Internet
subscription increased from 60.7 percent at the end of June 2011 to 61.1
percent at the end of September 2011.

 

The number of wireless data subscribers has gone up to
373 million in quarter ended September 2011 from 274.05 million in the same
quarter in 2010. Bharti Airtel is leading the wireless data market in India.

 

Wireless data user base stood at 346.67 million in
quarter ended June 2011.

 

42.79 percent of total wireless subscribers base are
capable of accessing data services/Internet at the end of September 2011 as
against 40.70 percent at the end of previous quarter, according to TRAI.
