How Verizon achieved 450% increase in network capacity for Super Bowl

Nicola Palmer, chief network officer at Verizon, says the wireless major has made significant investment to boost network capacity in Houston during the Super Bowl.

Verizon has increased its wireless network data capacity in Houston by 450 percent to ensure that its wireless customers receive the highest quality connectivity.

Verizon small cell in Houston
Verizon has deployed 220+ small cells including radio, antenna, power and a fiber connection in the Houston area. The network coverage in heavy traffic areas can range from a few hundred feet to upwards of 1,000 ft – supporting consumers to stream video or share on social media networks.

Verizon has also made investment in three-channel carrier aggregation (LTE Advanced) in the Houston area to enhance peak data speeds, providing 50 percent greater peak speeds.

Verizon has deployed distributed antenna system (DAS) in the underground tunnels promising residents and visitors to Houston better customer experience.

“We know people attending the Super Bowl and the incredible events surrounding the game will want to share their experiences with friends and loved ones around the nation, and will use their wireless devices to gather information and navigate throughout Houston and will use their devices to capture every exciting moment of their experience,” said Nicola Palmer, chief network officer at Verizon.

During last year’s Super Bowl, attendees at Levi stadium used seven TB of data during the game and over 68 TB of data throughout the 9-day event.
