No 3G impact: Airtel non-voice revenue contribution to total income up 0.5% in Q3 2011

major Bharti Airtel contribution of non-voice revenue to total income grew 0.5
percent in Q3 2011 despite roll out of 3G services.

 

In Q3 2011, non-voice
revenue contributed 15.2 percent of total income against 14.7 percent in Q3
2010 and 16.2 percent in Q2 2011.

 

In India, non-voice revenue
contributed 14.3 percent of total income in Q3 2011 against 13.8 percent in Q3
2010 and 14.5 percent in Q2 2011.

 

SMS income contributed 9
percent of mobile revenue in India during Q3 2011.

 

In Africa, non-voice revenue
contributed 8 percent of total income in Q3 2011 against 7.9 percent in Q3 2010
and 8.5 percent in Q2 2011.

 

SMS revenue was 4.4 percent
of mobile income in Africa in Q3 2011.

 

In Q3 2011, Airtel had 175.7
million GSM mobile customers on its network in India and South Asia. The
average monthly churn for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 was 7.9 percent.

 

During the quarter blended
ARPU was Rs 187 (US$ 3.7) per month as compared to Rs 183 (US$ 4.0) per month
in the quarter ended September 30, 2011.

 

The blended monthly usage
per customer, during the quarter was at 419 minutes. The Average rate per
minute during the quarter was 44.6 paisa.

 

Non voice revenue, which
includes Voice Mail Service, Call Management, Airtel Talkies and other value
added services like Hello Tunes, Music on Demand and Airtel Live contributed to
approximately 14.3 percent of the total revenues of the segment.

 

In Q3 2011, the company had
50.9 million GSM mobile customers on its network in Africa.  During the
quarter, the company added 2.5 million customers. The ARPU for the quarter was
US$ 7.1 per month. The blended monthly usage per customer, during the quarter
was at 125 minutes.

 

Non voice revenue, which
includes Voice Mail Service, Call Management, Airtel Talkies and other value
added services like Hello Tunes, Music on Demand and Airtel Live contributed to
approximately 8.0 percent of the total revenues of the segment.

 

Recently,
Bharti Airtel announced that it posted 17.1 percent increase in income in Q3 FY
2011-12 to Rs 18,477 crore.

India and South Asia showed
12.1 percent revenue growth aided by improvement in realization rates. Africa
revenues grew 16.1 percent  to  $1.05 billion.

 

Margin
in Africa improved to 26.7 percent in Q3 FY 2012 from 19.1 percent in Q3 FY
2011. Higher tax provisions impacted Airtel’s net income to nosedive by 22
percent to Rs 1,011 crore in Q3 2011-12 from Rs 1,303 crore in the
corresponding quarter previous fiscal.
