Uninor appoints Yogesh Malik as CEO, Sigve Brekke steps down as MD

Telecom Lead India: Uninor has appointed Yogesh Malik as the new CEO.

Sigve Brekke, who will step down as MD, will be responsible for Telenor affairs in India as the head of Telenor Group’s Asian operations.

This is the third major change at the top position of telecom operators in India. Earlier both Airtel and MTS India announced changes to top management.

Gopal Vittal is the new CEO of Airtel in India and South Asia.

Recently, MTS India (Sistema Shyam Teleservices) appointed Dmitry Shukov as the new CEO. Shukov is taking over from Vsevolod Rozanov, the current president and CEO of SSTL. The transition is expected to get formalized by 1 June 2013.

Yogesh was appointed COO in 2011. His focus on operational efficiency and innovations benefitted Uninor in becoming India’s fastest growing service provider.

Uninor’s operational focus and continued pursuit of efficiency will allow it to strengthen and develop Uninor as the most affordable service provider in India.

Yogesh previously held executive positions at Telenor Group headquarter in Norway, and he has served as CTO of Telenor Group companies in Ukraine and Bangladesh.

His extensive career in the telecom industry also includes experience from AT&T, Tata and Ericsson in India and Sweden and for the international mobile operator TIW (today known as Vodafone) in Canada, China, Brazil and the Czech Republic.

Sigve Brekke, who will continue to have overall responsibility for Telenor affairs in India as the head of Region Asia, will take over as chairman of Uninor.

Telenor Group will also be represented in India through its country office. This office will be responsible for Telenor Group’s external and strategic affairs in India, and continues to be headed by its chief representative in India, Rajiv Bawa.
