HiSilicon, MediaTek clock double-digit growth in smartphone AP market

The smartphone Applications Processor (AP) market increased 3 percent to $10 billion in H1 2016, says Strategy Analytics.

The Smartphone Apps Processor Market Share Q2 2016: LTE APs Drive Smartphone AP Revenue Growth report by Strategy Analytics said Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, Samsung LSI and Spreadtrum are the top five smartphone AP vendors in H1 2016.

Despite intense competition, Qualcomm held up well and topped the smartphone AP market with 39 percent revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 23 percent and Apple with 15 percent. Strategy Analytics estimates that 64-bit APs accounted for two-thirds of total smartphone AP shipments in 1H 2016.

Qualcomm maintained its smartphone AP market share leadership despite MediaTek’s strong inroads in 1H 2016.

“Qualcomm continued to recover its flagship market share with the newly launched Snapdragon 820, which featured in several flagships including the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, LG G5, Xiaomi Mi 5, OnePlus 3 and others. Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 652, 650 and 400 series of chips also gained good traction during 1H 2016 and helped Qualcomm to maintain volume,” said Sravan Kundojjala, associate director at Strategy Analytic.

HiSilicon, MediaTek, Samsung LSI and Spreadtrum registered a strong double-digit shipment growth in H1 2016.

Samsung LSI is depending on Samsung Mobile, while and HiSilicon is relying on Huawei for their growth in the smartphone application processor market. The telecom research report said that Both Samsung LSI and HiSilicon continued to capitalize on their flagship success plus expansion into the mid-range.

MediaTek maintained good momentum with increased shipments of its LTE-integrated APs.

Spreadtrum maintained its lead in 3G APs and increased its LTE AP shipments in 1H 2016.
