India mobile phone industry dips 9% to 235.6 mn in 2015

The India mobile phone industry size dipped 9.1 percent to 235.6 million units in 2015 from 257.2 million in 2014.

40 percent of the handsets sold in India were smartphones, according to a report called India Mobile Handsets market for CY 2015 released by CMR.

Top players in India feature phone and smartphone segments are Samsung, Micromax and Intex. CMR did not share the specific market share of smartphone and feature phone makers.

Lenovo made significant gains in India smartphone market in 2015.

2G smartphones made 9 percent contribution to overall smartphone shipments in 2015. 4G is the fastest growing segment.

The size of the India mobile phone market is expected to be 250 million units in 2016, including 130 million smartphones.

Smartphones grew 18 percent, while feature phones declined 27.1 percent in annual shipments.
