Latin America broadband connections up 6% to 72.4 million

Broadband lines grew 6.1 percent to 72.4 million connections in Latin America in 2017 as compared with 6.3 percent growth achieved in 2016.

DSL is the most used technology with a market share of 48.1 percent as compared with cable modem with 38.6 percent of market share. Optical fibre reached a share of 13.3 percent (+3.5 points vs 2016), according to Dataxis.

The broadband penetration over households reached 41.5 percent in 2017, adding one point and a half to 2016’s penetration rate.

Chile, Mexico and Argentina’s broadband penetration rate exceeds 50 percent. Colombia has the regional average in terms of broadband penetration rate. Brazil’s broadband penetration is 6 points below regional average, but has the highest growth rate.
