Lenovo displaces Samsung to lead India tablet market in Q2 2017

India tablet market Q2 2017Lenovo has displaced Samsung in the India tablet market with 21.8 percent market share in Q2 2017, said IDC India.

The tablet shipment of Lenovo grew 12.6 percent over the previous quarter. Lenovo dominates the India tablet commercial segment, as over 80 percent of its shipments in Q2 2017 was primarily driven by specific commercial projects delivered to government, education and large enterprises in India.

Samsung has slipped to second place but maintained the shipments volume of the previous quarter.

Samsung gained share in the commercial segment especially Government and enterprise verticals though it lost volume in the consumer segment.

Datawind declines to third position as its market share dropped by two percentage points and shipments fell 9.4 percent from the previous quarter. Datawind continues to witness slowdown as its major focus remains on the declining consumer segment.

iBall is the fourth largest tablet maker as shipments fell 9 percent sequentially in Q2 2017. iBall is anticipated to gain traction in the commercial segment in the coming quarters as it has started venturing into commercial projects especially in the Government sector.

Apple is in the fifth position with 49.6 percent q-o-q growth — driven by refreshed product including iPad 2017 in the lower price band of below $500 segment. Apple witnessed year-on-year decline of 17.3 percent in Q2 2017.

The size of the India tablet market was 722,000 tablets in Q2 2017 with 26.8 percent drop annually and 2.9 percent increase from the previous quarter.

The quarter on quarter growth in the Indian tablet space was primarily due to the growth in the commercial segment.

Tablets shipments in the consumer segment declined 13.8 percent quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2017.

The implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) inhibited the growth of tablet shipments in the consumer segment.

“Uncertainty about the levy of the new tax structure, restricted the stocking of inventory and in turn leading to limited sell-in of tablets in the country,” says Celso Gomes, associate market analyst, Client Devices, IDC India.

Digital projects across Government and education sectors are the key driving verticals for the growth of the commercial sector.
