MediaTek, Samsung, Spreadtrum drop their tablet AP share

Strategy Analytics research said the tablet Applications Processor (AP) market revenue rose 3 percent to $2 billion in 2017 thanks to improved ASPs — despite shipment decline.

Apple gained market share in the tablet AP space to finish the year with 36 percent revenue share.

Intel has 18 percent of the tablet AP market.

Qualcomm has 17 percent share in the tablet AP segment.

X86 architecture-based tablet shipments increased 13 percent. ARM-based chip shipments declined 7 percent in 2017.

The report said the tablet AP market rose in terms of revenue, helped by improved average selling prices (ASPs).

All the major tablet AP vendors shifted their focus to profitable and high-performance tablet APs boosting ASPs.

“x86 vendor Intel’s continued success with Microsoft Windows operating system played a key role in the overall tablet AP ASP improvement. Qualcomm’s support for the Windows operating system will increase the addressable market in future,” Sravan Kundojjala, associate director at Strategy Analytics, said.

Apple, HiSilicon, Intel and Qualcomm achieved tablet AP shipment growth in 2017. MediaTek, Samsung, Rockchip, Allwinner and Spreadtrum faced drop in their tablet AP shipments.

“Baseband-integrated tablet applications processor shipments accounted for 28 percent of total tablet AP shipments in 2017, flat compared to 2016,” Stuart Robinson, executive director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, said.
