Phone market revenue grows 22% to $20 bn in 2016 in India

The revenue of India phone market rose 22 percent to INR 1,359,975 million or $20.39 billion in 2016, according to research firm CMR.

Samsung grabbed 33 percent market share with its revenue of INR 453,713 million. Apple has 8 percent share with INR 112,975 million revenue. Lenovo has 7 percent revenue share with INR 99,806 million revenue.

4G phone makers’ revenues increased over 100 percent to INR 992,74 million in 2016. 3G phone companies’ revenue declined about 60 percent to INR 165,978 million.

Analyst firm CMR said that the 4G-capable feature phone is going to cannibalize the below INR 5K smartphone market in 2017.

Revenue from feature phones constitutes around 14 percent with about 57 percent of the market in terms of volume.

Feature phones would support the voice-centric market. In 2016, 4G constituted about 69 percent of total smartphone shipments, while 3G was 29 percent. In 2017, 4G will cover near 100 percent of smartphones.

The war between India phone brands such as Micromax, Intex, Lava and Karbonn and Lenovo, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi is going to be aggressive.

Micromax, Intex, Lava and Karbonn grabbed 35 percent share in terms of volume with 22 percent share in value. Lenovo, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi have 10 percent share in volume with 17 percent share in value.

India manufactured phones had about 66 percent share in 2016. The share of India manufactured phones will be 90 percent in 2017.
