Telecom Lead India Team: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently shared the latest mobile subscriber base, the growth in broadband users, market share of mobile and broadband operators, etc. in August 2016.
Indian rural mobile user base
India has 442.99 million mobile users in rural markets of the country against 585.89 million in urban locations in August 2016. India’s rural mobile subscriber base fell in August from 444.63 million in July 2016, while urban mobile user base was 589.61 million.
Indian mobile market share
Bharti Airtel is the mobile market leader with 25.03 percent share. Vodafone is in the second top position. Idea Cellular is in the third position with 17.19 percent share. BSNL is the fourth largest mobile operator with 8.98 percent share.
Net addition of mobile users in August 2016
BSNL was the top performer in August with a net addition of 16,46,522 mobile subscribers. Bharti Airtel was in second position in terms of net addition.
Due to migration from CDMA to LTE networks, Reliance Communications’ CDMA subscriber base fell by 18 million in August.
India broadband market share
The number of broadband subscribers increased from 166.96 million in July 2016 to 171.71 million in August 2016 with a monthly growth rate of 2.84 percent.
Bharti Airtel with 45.35 million users, Vodafone (35.01 million), Idea Cellular (29.58 million), BSNL (21.04 million) and Reliance Communications (15.24 million) are the top broadband operators in India.
The top five Wired Broadband Service providers are BSNL with 9.84 million users, Bharti Airtel (1.91 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (1.09 million), MTNL (1.07 million) and YOU Broadband (0.57 million).
The top five Wireless Broadband Service providers are Bharti Airtel with 43.44 million users, Vodafone (35.00 million), Idea Cellular (29.58 million), Reliance Communications (15.13 million) and BSNL (11.20 million).
The above statistics are for August 2016. TRAI will come out with telecom subscriber base for September soon. Since Reliance Jio became active in September, we will see some changes in mobile subscriber market share of existing operators.
