Orange Business bags IoT deal from bicycle security startup Sherlock

Orange embedded SIM cards for IoTOrange Business Services bagged an Internet of Things (IoT) deal from Sherlock, a bicycle security startup in Turin, Italy, to offer IoT connectivity and a management portal over the next three years.

Sherlock will use Orange embedded SIM cards in its IoT anti-theft solution for bicycles being rolled out in Europe and North America. The aftermarket solution incorporates a small anti-theft device hidden in the handlebars of any bicycle, and a mobile app.

“The Orange collaboration with Sherlock proves how digital transformation can be a disruptive force, creating new services that respond to people’s changing needs and expectations,” Fabrice de Windt, senior vice president, Europe, at Orange Business Services.

The device integrates a GPS module for localization, a GPRS module for Internet connectivity and low-energy Bluetooth. It comes with two years of network connectivity included in the purchase price.

A thief cannot detect the device and does not alter the design of the bike. The security device works as a unique identifier for the bicycle. This digital document was designed by working closely with the Turin City Police and contains all the elements to prove ownership of the bike.

The owner receives an instant notification on their smartphone via Bluetooth, if someone moves or tampers the bike. They can track the location of the bike at any time, and provide the authorities temporary access to the information via a unique tracking code.

Orange installs its SIM cards in the devices at the production stage and tested before shipping. The Orange connectivity will ensure roaming on different networks for a suitable connection.

“Sherlock establishes a direct connection between the bicycle and its owner, giving the bicycle a voice to shout for help. Orange Business Services will help us provide cyclists with the peace of mind they deserve thanks to its robust, reliable connectivity,” said Pierluigi Freni, CEO at Sherlock.
