Huawei GPON revenue dips 5%, EPON revenue declines 4% in Q1 2013

Telecom Lead Asia: Huawei Technologies has reported 5 percent decline in GPON and 4 percent dip in EPON equipment revenue in the first quarter of 2013.

Despite fall in revenues, Huawei maintained its worldwide revenue lead in the overall broadband aggregation equipment market with 33 percent market share, Infonetics Research said.

The #2 vendor in the broadband aggregation equipment market is Alcatel-Lucent.

China Telecom’s FTTX business has contributed to the success of ZTE in Q1, which is in the third position in broadband aggregation equipment market.

“The broadband aggregation equipment market is off to a difficult start this year, with overall revenue down both sequentially and from the year-ago first quarter, though there is significant disparity in results between regions and technologies,” said Jeff Heynen, principal analyst, Broadband Access and Pay TV at Infonetics Research.

Infonetics Research observed 27 percent dip in spending on DSL, PON, and FTTH equipment spending in the EMEA region (Europe, the Middle East and Africa).

PON equipment revenue in EMEA dropped 50 percent due to seasonality and the conclusion of initial GPON purchases by Russian and Middle Eastern operators.

There was a significant drop in EPON spending in China. China Telecom and China Unicom focused on GPON-based FTTH deployments to provide 20M access to subscribers.

Spending on DSL, PON, and FTTH equipment decreased 7 percent in Q1 2013 from Q4 2012 to $1.5 billion worldwide.
