Samsung Electronics announced the launch of Galaxy S23 smartphones — Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 – at a time when consumers are trying to hold their costly purchases.
Samsung, the leader in the smartphone business, is yet to reveal the retail price of Galaxy S23 phones for consumers. Galaxy S23 comes with a number of attractive features. Mobile operators are trying to offer best price for Galaxy S23 on their 5G networks.
The latest Gartner report forecasts worldwide smartphone shipments will dip 4 percent in 2023 to 1.23 billion units from 1.28 billion units in 2022.
“Consumers are holding onto their phones longer than expected, from six to 9 months, and moving away from fixed to flexible contracts in the absence of meaningful new technology. Vendors are passing on inflationary component costs to users which is dampening demand further. End-user spending on mobile phones is projected to decline 3.8 percent in 2023,” Ranjit Atwal, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, said recently.
Samsung, according to IDC’s research director Nabila Popal, has shipped 260.9 million smartphones in 2022 as against 272.1 million in 2021. Samsung is the #1 smartphone brand with 21.6 percent share last year. The smartphone share of Samsung was 20 percent in 2021.
Samsung, according to Le Xuan Chiew, Research Analyst at Canalys, is better placed to navigate ongoing uncertainties thanks to high-end dominance. Samsung Electronics is maintaining its profitability focus by strengthening its high-end portfolio, the research report said.
Starting on February 17, 2023, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 will be widely available in carriers and retailers and on Samsung.com.
TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said: “The entire Galaxy S23 series is the new standard-bearer of trustworthy premium smartphone experiences. We’re on a mission to redefine peak performance by bringing together powerful, lasting innovations and sustainability.”
Qualcomm, #1 chipset supplier for smartphones, said Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy powers Samsung Galaxy S23 series globally.
Samsung Galaxy S23 features Qualcomm Technologies’ leading connectivity solutions, including the Snapdragon X70 Modem-RF System, the world’s fastest and smartest 5G modem-RF system, and Qualcomm FastConnect for high-speed and ultra-low latency Wi-Fi, and the latest Bluetooth audio enhancements.
Telecom operators such as AT&T, T-Mobile, among others, are offering attractive buying plans for smartphone customers.
“Aggressive carrier promotions amounting up to $1000 off the sales price should help device sales during this time of inflationary pressures. Premium phones continue to be responsible for mainstream adoption of 5G services,” Anisha Bhatia, Senior Analyst at GlobalData, said.
According to GlobalData, 5G mobile service revenues in North America will reach $195.7 billion by 2026. Carriers will use Samsung and Apple 5G smartphones to upsell premium service plans to consumers.
