Will Samsung struggle to sell Galaxy S23 amid slowdown?

Samsung Electronics announced the launch of Galaxy S23 smartphones — Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 – at a time when consumers are trying to hold their costly purchases.

The latest Gartner report forecasts worldwide smartphone shipments will dip 4 percent in 2023 to 1.23 billion units from 1.28 billion units in 2022.

“Consumers are holding onto their phones longer than expected, from six to 9 months, and moving away from fixed to flexible contracts in the absence of meaningful new technology. Vendors are passing on inflationary component costs to users which is dampening demand further. End-user spending on mobile phones is projected to decline 3.8 percent in 2023,” Ranjit Atwal, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, said recently.

Samsung, according to IDC’s research director Nabila Popal, has shipped 260.9 million smartphones in 2022 as against 272.1 million in 2021. Samsung is the #1 smartphone brand with 21.6 percent share last year. The smartphone share of Samsung was 20 percent in 2021.

Samsung, according to Le Xuan Chiew, Research Analyst at Canalys, is better placed to navigate ongoing uncertainties thanks to high-end dominance. Samsung Electronics is maintaining its profitability focus by strengthening its high-end portfolio, the research report said.

Telecom operators such as AT&T, T-Mobile, among others, are offering attractive buying plans for smartphone customers.

“Aggressive carrier promotions amounting up to $1000 off the sales price should help device sales during this time of inflationary pressures. Premium phones continue to be responsible for mainstream adoption of 5G services,” Anisha Bhatia, Senior Analyst at GlobalData, said.

According to GlobalData, 5G mobile service revenues in North America will reach $195.7 billion by 2026. Carriers will use Samsung and Apple 5G smartphones to upsell premium service plans to consumers.
