Ciena revenue up 14.3% in Q2 FY12 at $477.6 million

Telecom Lead America: Network specialist Ciena has posted
revenue of $477.6 million for the fiscal second quarter 2012, up 14.3 percent,
as compared to $417.9 million for the same quarter a year earlier.

 

Product segment fetched $384.8 million revenue in Q2
FY12, as compared to $336 million a year earlier. Revenue from service segment
stood at $92.8 million for Q2 Fy12, as compared to $81.8 million a year
earlier.

 

The company posted operating expenses of $194.4 million
for Q2 FY12, against $221.4 million a year ago.

 

Ciena’s net loss for the fiscal second quarter 2012 was
$27.8 million, or $(0.28) per common share, which compares to net loss of $62.7
million, or $(0.66) per common share, for the fiscal second quarter 2011.

 

Our second quarter was highlighted by strong revenue
growth and positive overall operating performance, which demonstrated our
ability to deliver operating leverage. We remain confident that we are well
positioned for future growth and continue to expect our second half operating
results to be stronger than the first half,” said Gary Smith, president and CEO
of Ciena.

 

During the quarter, non-U.S. customers contributed 47
percent of total revenue. The company said that two 10 percent-plus customers
represented a total of 27 percent% of revenue.

 

At the end of Q2 FY12, cash and investments totaled
$635.7 million and cash flow from operations totaled $60.5 million.

 

For the upcoming quarter, Ciena expects revenue in the
range of $455 to $485 million and adjusted (non-GAAP) gross margin of
approximately 40 percent. Also, the company anticipates adjusted (non-GAAP) operating
expense in the low to mid $180s million range.

 

SSE Telecoms selects Ciena optical networking technology

 

Recently, SSE Telecoms of the U.K. selected Ciena’s
coherent 100 Gb/s optical networking technology for its national network.

 

SSE Telecoms is deploying Ciena’s 6500
Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical
processors to connect its key data centre locations across Britain.
